Summer Solstice Magic

Summer Solstice Magic

On June 21st, we celebrated the summer solstice, the longest day of the year. With summer upon us and warmer days and nights, magic is all around. During a walk along the boardwalk at Spring Lake Park in Emmet County, I was thrilled to spot several turtles of various sizes and ages sunning themselves among the water lilies. How many can you spot in the photo above? I think there are at least four. Last night, the fireflies came out to play and I hurried to join them. In my excitement I nearly startled a skunk who was lazily eating grubs as the darkness settled in and fireflies flickered around us. I watched quietly as it slowly meandered down the hill and disappeared into the field heading toward the forest. Tonight, I was joined by a curious young porcupine as I photographed the fairies at play. We had a nice visit before I carefully slipped away so not to startle my new friend. I hope delightful surprises have brightened your week, as well. Welcome summer!
